Full of wit, warmth, and even goblin attendants, The Chimes returns to Remy Bumppo for the first time since 2013 – this time virtually and on-demand – just in time for the holiday season. In this one-person show, Artistic Director Nick Sandys portrays Charles Dickens and his whole array of lively characters as the story builds towards the dawning of New Year’s Day. Experience this classic Dickensian holiday tale during this Scrooge-like year, all from the safety and comfort of your home.

The Chimes by Charles Dickens tells the story of Toby “Trotty” Veck. He has lost his faith in humanity and believes that his poverty is the result of his unworthiness. As he starts to think these thoughts, Trotty is visited on New Year’s Eve by goblins to help restore his faith and show him that nobody is born evil, but rather that crime and poverty are things created by man.

Sara Malton

Sara Malton received her PhD from the University of Toronto in 2004 and thereafter went on to a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Cornell University. In 2005 she joined the Department of English Language and Literature at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Canada, where she is Professor of Nineteenth-Century Literature. She has published widely on such authors as Thomas Hardy, George Eliot, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Charles Dickens. Her book, Forgery in Nineteenth-Century Literature and Culture: Fictions of Finance from Dickens to Wilde was published by Palgrave-Macmillan in 2009, and she is the current secretary of the Dickens Society. Her first love may be Victorian literature, but Chicago is a close second: she is absolutely delighted to “return,” in a way, to Chicago today, having first encountered it and the delights of the Newberry Library in 2009 and in several visits since. It’s top of her list of post-pandemic travel destinations.
