Declaration of Independence ReadingTimothy Douglas reading

Remy Bumppo Theatre Company joined the Grant Park Music Festival's Independence Celebration on July 3, 2011

As a special part of the evening’s festivities, Remy Bumppo gathered 100 cultural representatives to read aloud our country's Declaration of Independence.

The Declaration Of Independence is written in a wonderful language art, which is now almost defunct, called the Art of Rhetoric ... a practice cultivated over the past two-thousand years inspired by the belief that it was essential to develop the way people spoke, and wrote, in order gain a depth of understanding - through language - human being to human being. The Art of Rhetoric was developed in order to be able to persuade and influence people, so asserts Tina Packer, founding artistic director of Shakespeare & Company.

At Remy Bumppo it feels to us that the Art of Rhetoric is an incredibly important component of our culture and civilization. With a reputation known for bringing forth the power, impact and nuance of sophisticated language, we look forward to speaking aloud, and further illuminating our nation's birthing document at this Chicago celebration.

Remy Bumppo’s reading opens the Grant Park Orchestra’s Independence Celebration honoring the meaning of America, featuring many beloved favorites as well as a few surprises.
