How to Build a World: Demystifying Design
Have you ever walked into a theatre and were wowed by the scenic design, like the glass box in our production of Routes or the flowing world of Dear Elizabeth? Have you ever been curious about how a costume designer dreamed up impeccable costumes, like the beautiful looks from the cusp of the 1930s in Blues for an Alabama Sky? Discover the artistry behind stage production design with this course tailored for enthusiastic theatre-goers wanting to satisfy their curiosity! Led by immersive designer Nina Castillo-D’Angier, together we will demystify the design process through hands-on engagement and experimentation with lighting, sound, costume, scenic, and props design.
DATES: 5 sessions: Thursdays, February 27, March 6, 13, 20, 27
TIME: 6:30-8:30 PM

About the Instructor
NINA CASTILLO-D’ANGIER (she/they/siya) is a literal world-builder who makes and holds space to safely explore vulnerability through production design; interactive immersion; and the art of ritual griefwork. Moonlighting as Nina Nightingale, she is one of fewer than 100 silhouette portrait artists in the world and daylights as a design professor for The Theatre School at DePaul University. Their multidisciplinary, diasporic work as a queer Filipinx-American is informed by a desire to indulge curiosity and bring mindful connection to everyday interactions, whether that be with strangers, objects, or the many things that we consider familiar. // @ninadngr on most platforms, @silhouetteportraits for Nina Nightingale
