In the final week Linda will take students through a mock general audition for Remy Bumppo. Each student will receive coaching and feedback on their work with specific emphasis on the use of language. Class size is small for overall individual attention.

Man and SUPERWOMAN

If you are captivated by the young women struggling to break through society’s rules in PBS’s Downton Abbey, this is the course for you!

Follow the growth of the “new woman” through eyes of playwright George Bernard Shaw and American actress/writer/suffragette Elizabeth Robins. Discover how the work of these great writers reflected the changing gender roles of their day and also paved the way for new representations of women on the stage, turning the traditional “cup and saucer” play of the 19th century on its head in the process.

Artistic Associate Shawn Douglass and You Never Can Tell dramaturg Lisa Kelly will lead this uniquely structured course that will feature weekly reading, lively discussions, historical background, and actors performing scenes from the plays. The focus will be on four plays: Shaw’s You Never Can Tell, Mrs. Warren’s Profession, Major Barbara, and Robins’ Votes for Women.

Involving, informative, and fun, this course is strong enough for a woman, but men will like it too!

FOUR WEEKS -- $150.00
Mondays, 6:30pm-9:00pm, September 24 – October 15, 2012

Take Center Stage: Executive Coaching with Linda Gillum

Remy Bumppo Casting Director and Artistic Associate Linda Gillum uses theatre techniques that turn the monologue of a speech into a dialogue with the audience while taking the fear out of public speaking. This one day workshop will help you create a speech to present with the emphasis on delivery skills, highlighting your personality. Students may also bring in a prepared speech that they have worked on in previous public speaking engagements.

For over ten years, Linda Gillum has been consulting with large corporations in the area of presentational speaking. With an extensive theatre background, both as an actor and director, she has first-hand knowledge of how to deal with "stage fright" and the fears and challenges of being in front of an audience. She will help you transform dry, informational material, making it easier to be entertaining and interesting, with the ultimate goal of truly engaging your audience. The workshop is divided into two parts: Delivery, where your individual challenges regarding eye contact, voice and physicality will be addressed, and Organization, where you will be assisted in developing a presentation that will suit your individual needs and style. Ms. Gillum has worked with groups as well as one-on-one coaching and has extended her knowledge to Remy Bumppo Theatre where she is an Artistic Associate.

Remy Bumppo L.A.B. – Literary Advisory Board

Led by Artistic Director Nick Sandys

Each year, Remy Bumppo receives adaptations and translations for the theater from around the world. We do so in an effort to further our mission of exploring great theatrical language and to find new exciting work for our mainstage season, by both new and established playwrights. In 2013 this newly re-formatted class will examine how we select these plays for possible development or production: reading the first drafts, focusing on key issues of language, ideas, ethical complexity, wit; through selecting a short-list for the season by balancing genres, casting, and production values; and then programming a full season for the mainstage.  In reading 12 of the plays that have interested Remy Bumppo's Artistic Associates over the past year, all translations or adaptations, we will discuss the many complex choices that enter into adapting a work for the stage; the possibilities that each text opens for a team of actors, directors, and designers; and what Remy Bumppo looks for in a “good play” – one that will engage the minds and hearts of the audience.

The class will discuss these 12 plays over the course of three months, meeting in six every-other-week sessions culminating in selecting and pitching its top choices to Artistic Director Nick Sandys for his consideration in selecting the 2013/2014 mainstage season or a series of public readings.
